ABOUT
PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIO
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy that addresses dysfunction of the pelvic floor, as well as connecting it to issues occurring in other areas of the body, including the back and hips. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and ligaments that runs from your pubic bone, sit bones and tail bones and serves as a bowl to support the pelvic organs including the bladder, colon and uterus. While most will equate the pelvic floor with “peeing, pooping, sex and childbirth”, it serves many other functions—specifically skeletal support and circulation—and is directly impacted by the nervous system.
You may benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy if you have any type of pelvic floor dysfunction including:
- Incontinence or leakage of urine or stool
- Urge: a very strong physical sensation of needing to pee
- Frequency: peeing more than 5-8 times a day
- Painful bowel or bladder emptying
- Constipation
- Hemorrhoids/fissures
- Pain or dysfunction with intercourse (male and female)
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Prenatal and postnatal care, including c-section
- Diastasis recti
- Post gynecological, abdominal or urinary surgery
- Chronic or unexplained pain in the back or hips
Whereas many of us may have some of the above conditions—in particular postpartum women who are told that pelvic floor dysfunction post birth is to be expected—it is important to know that many of them are treatable. Most clients who have a pelvic floor assessment are surprised and pleased with their results. Pelvic floor physiotherapy also extends to men, who, for a variety of reasons, can also suffer from pelvic conditions. Regardless of sex, pelvic floor health is an important as a component of overall well being.
